Last week, leading up to election day, now-Congressman-Elect David Trone's campaign publicized the statement below attributed to his "Jewish Community Advisory Board".
As you can see dozens of people supported Mr Trone's candidacy because would "be a Champion for Israel in Congress". Out of the dozens of people on this advisory board, three are Montgomery County elected officials: Montgomery County Councilman-Elect Andrew Friedson, Maryland State Senator Cheryl Kagan and Gaithersburg City Councilman Ryan Spiegel.
This is statement is deeply troubling. Members of US Congress should be champions for their own constituents -- not for foreign nations. Instead of championing the government that holds millions of Palestinians stateless and without basic human rights in conditions that strongly resemble Apartheid, our members of Congress should demand accountability for any countries that violate international law.
Israel holds hundreds of Palestinian children in its jails and every day violates UN Sec Resolution 2334 which says that Israeli settlements have "no legal validity". Recently Israel's Prime Minister has been lobbying President Trump to continue supporting the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia who is credibly accused of orchestrating the assassination and butchering of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Supporting a Congressional candidate because they will be a "champion for Israel in Congress" in spite of Israel's illegal conduct shows poor judgement and a callous disregard for human rights on the part of Mr. Friedsen, Ms. Kagan and Mr. Spiegel.
